Myths Busted Regarding Wine and Cellaring

Wine collection is a unique hobby. More than that, it can also be a good business and a source of additional income. These are among the reasons there is a growing number of wine collectors and enthusiasts today. 


When you want to pursue wine collecting, then it is important that you be aware of the different equipment needed for storing wines like a wine chiller and wine coolers. Also, you should get yourself acquainted with the different myths and facts related to collecting wines.

Myth 1. Location does not matter in wine storage.

Fact. Location means a lot to wine storage. Wines are sensitive and they need to be provided the ideal environment for them to keep their taste. In fact, the bottles have to be stored in your house’s coolest and most humid area. If you don’t have such a place in your house or if you don’t have a wine cellar, then you may opt to use a wine chiller.

Myth 2. Do not stain your wine cellar.

Fact. You can paint or stain your wine cellar. According to wrong beliefs, the stain or paint may be toxic to the drinker and to the wines. This is no longer true because there are  paints available in the market today that are eco-friendly and do not adversely affect your wine bottles. Painting or staining the wine cellar will actually make it more attractive and last longer.

Myth 3. The bigger the wine refrigeration, the better.


Fact. Size of the wine refrigerator or wine chiller does not matter to the taste of the wine. What is important when having wine coolers or a wine refrigerator is that it is functional and able to provide the best environment for your wines. A bulky fridge will only eat up space in the kitchen or living room.

Myth 4. Uncorking wine bottles improves wines.

Fact. Aeration is done by decanting. If you uncork the wines, it is believed that it facilitates the process of aeration. However, studies have indicated that oxygen cannot sufficiently pass through the narrow neck of a wine bottle. Decanting is the solution to this.

Myth 5. You should not chill red wines.

Fact. Red wines taste better when they are served at least several degrees lower than room temperature or when they are chilled with the use of wine coolers. The alcohol portion of the wine dominates and doesn’t allow the drinker to actually experience the subtle taste of the wine when the wine is too warm.

Myth 6. The more expensive the wine is, the better it tastes.

Fact. Taste and price of the wine are not directly related. Wine bottle prices may vary depending on the cost of materials and ingredients during the time the wine was made. A good vintage the year prior of a high priced wine, may produce a poor drop the following year but still have the high price.  Or a relatively new supplier may not yet have the reputation, but still has excellent taste at a low price.

One fact remains true. Invest in a wine chiller or wine coolers for your wine collection so you can be sure to enjoy your acquisitions in the future.
